To get the best from your ductless mini split, even in lower temperatures, follow these tips:
Lower the energy load – Reduce consumption within your home as much as you can by enhancing the thermal envelope. Caulking and weatherstripping will increase energy efficiency, resulting in the need of a smaller heating load.
Get the size right – Select a unit that’s the right size to cope with the lowest temperatures you’re likely to encounter. Piping also needs to be sized correctly—at least 15 feet will be required.
Manage your expectations – Understand that it takes time for the system to bring a house up to a comfortable temperature and program accordingly.
Carefully position the interior unit – To get the best performance, it’s important that the unit is mounted at least 18 inches off the floor.
Protect the outdoor compressor – Make sure the professional mounts the ductless mini split at least two feet from the ground. This is particularly important in colder climates as it means the unit won’t be covered in snow. Protect the unit from snowfall by installing a small roof over it for added protection.
