Adequate attic insulation is an important element in ensuring energy efficient heating and cooling.

Unless your home was constructed in the past 10 years or you have made significant upgrades to increase its energy efficiency, adding insulation to your attic space is bound to save you money on your winter utility bills. There are several ways you can verify whether or not your attic insulation is up to par this winter.

Is your attic insulation adequate for Colorado winters?

• Quantity – The first thing you want to do is take a look at your attic space and verify that the quantity of insulation is sufficient. While you’re up there, take a peek into crawl spaces and interior walls to make sure they’re adequately insulated as well. If your attic floor joists are exposed more than a few inches, your home will benefit from additional insulation. Ideally, insulation should be roughly equal to, or should cover, the top of the joists. This is especially true if your ductwork is running through the attic. Ducts that run in unconditioned air spaces cause significant energy waste as well.
• Quality – Insulation requirements vary according to geographic location and climate. Your insulation blankets or batts will have the R-value written directly on them. If the insulation is loose-fill, or blown-in, the R-values should be listed on existing paperwork. Otherwise, you may need to hire a professional insulation contractor to evaluate the material for you. Because of our unique geography, Colorado falls into four separate R-value recommendation zones. This Energy Star map will give you a good indication of the recommended R-value for your specific location. When in doubt, increasing the insulation R-value to the next level will ensure maximum energy efficiency.
• Installation – If you choose to use blanket batts or rolls, installing additional insulation is a relatively simple DIY project. However, spray foam and loose-fill insulation will usually require a professional contractor to ensure it’s installed adequately.
