When it comes to proper HVAC maintenance, changing an air filter is one of the most important things you can do to lengthen system life. This simple routine will not only boost your system’s efficiency but it will also help you save money on utility bills. There are several essential steps to follow when changing the AC filter.
Four Steps to Changing an Air Filter
Locate the filter – First and foremost, you have to know where the air filter is. Usually, it’s located in the return air duct so you’ll have to take the cover of the inside unit off to find the filter.
Check the filter’s size – In order to buy new filters, you’ll need to know the size of your current one. Using a tape measure, check the size of your filter, write down its measurements and take them with you when going to the hardware store.
Replace the filter – Once you’ve purchased a new filter, you’ll need to put it in the air conditioner. If you’re unsure how to do it, check to see if there are arrows on it, showing which direction the filter goes. Remember that the arrows should be in line with the airflow direction.
Check if you’ve placed the filter correctly – Turn your air conditioner on and ensure that the air is being sucked out of the room. If not, shut it down, take the filter out and turn it around.
Make a habit of changing your A/C filters regularly. This should be done every three to four weeks. Clean filters help remove dust, mold and pollen from your home and result in a range of benefits for your HVAC system. Dirty ones can lead to various health issues including dry eyes, fatigue and even allergies.
