While you generally schedule service for your cooling equipment in the spring, fall is the time of year to schedule a tune-up for your heating equipment.
A tune-up helps to ensure that you have an efficient system that will keep your Colorado home warm. To make the most of your HVAC annual service visit, prepare for the technician’s arrival.
Before you call to schedule your fall tune-up:
- If you rent your home, call your landlord before you schedule a tune-up. It’s likely that your landlord is responsible for furnace maintenance.
- Know where the programmable thermostat, heating equipment and circuit breakers are located.
- Have the brand and model numbers on hand. If you’re using the contractor who installed your unit, your technician will probably have this information on file. But if you’re using a new contractor, having the model number and brand will be helpful.
- Make note of any problems you have been experiencing. Think about how long the problems have persisted and what — if anything — seems to trigger the symptoms.
Once your appointment has been set:
- Shut off the heat pump (if this is the heating equipment you’re having serviced) a few hours in advance if the equipment has ice buildup. This ensures that the technician will be able to service it.
- If you can’t be home for the service call, make sure another family member or close friend is at your home to answer any of the technician’s questions or take down any information he wants to leave.
- Have your phone available in case the technician calls to confirm the appointment.
- Make sure the equipment is accessible. Clear the way to the furnace. And if it’s wet or snowy outside, make sure the floor is dry. You don’t want the technician to take a spill. Most technicians carry plastic booties to slip over their shoes. If your technician doesn’t put any on, remind him.
- Have cash, a check or a credit card ready to pay the technician at the completion of the visit.
