A heat pump can be a great source of comfort in the home, especially during the extreme weather conditions experienced in heating or cooling periods.

Your heat pump can save your hard-earned dollars on energy bills, as well as reduce the amount of hassle required to run separate heating and cooling systems.

Heat pump performance is dependent on how often your system is serviced and maintained. Neglecting the maintenance of your system can result in a decrease in heat pump performance and efficiency as well as the potential breakdown of your equipment.

There are a few things that should be done by your qualified contractor to ensure your system is performing at its optimum.

• If installing a new system, make sure that your contractor does a load calculation on your home beforehand. It’s important that the heat pump you decide to install is the right size. An incorrectly sized one will result in lowered efficiency and heat pump performance.
• Your duct system should be checked for leaks and correct sizing as problems in these areas can also lead to decreased performance. All ducts should be sealed and insulated effectively.
• Check that your return air grilles are properly sized. An undersized one will result in a decrease in comfort and efficiency.
• Your indoor heater closet door should be sealed shut. Draft air which enters the system through this closet door can rob the system of its peak performance and efficiency.
• Have your contractor install curved-blade grilles to ensure the best airflow and circulation around your home.
• Refrigerant charge should be maintained by your contractor. Don’t try to do it yourself as an incorrect charge can cause harm to your system, as well as decrease comfort levels and efficiency.

Remember that your heat pump will require a regular servicing at least once a year, preferably during the spring as this is the best time to service, just before the summer cooling period sets in.
