reduce energy consumptionWhen you reduce energy consumption in your Denver home, you not only help the environment, but you’ll also see your efforts pay off in reduced utility bills, as well.

There are many easy ways to reduce energy consumption and some cost little or nothing:

  1. Upgrade the HVAC system: When your current system is due to be replaced, choose an energy-efficient system. The extra initial costs will be more than made up in reduced monthly utility bills for the life of the system.
  2. Add insulation: A poorly-insulated house can significantly increase energy usage. Adding extra insulation, especially in the floors, ceilings and attic will reduce energy bills and keep you more comfortable during the worst weather.
  3. Seal air leaks: Consider having a home energy evaluation performed to find hidden air leaks in your home. Use caulk and weather stripping to seal around windows, doors, plumbing and electrical runs.
  4. Turn off electrical devices: Turning off the lights and appliances in rooms you’re not using can reduce energy consumption significantly. Plug computers and home entertainment systems into outlet strips so they can be turned off easily, eliminating phantom power draws.
  5. Replace old light bulbs: Use compact fluorescent or LED bulbs in the majority of your light fixtures to save up to 70 percent on your lighting costs, compared to inefficient incandescent bulbs.
  6. Replace old windows: Upgrading from old single-pane windows to insulated dual-pane windows can reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling by up to 25 percent.
  7. Choose appliances carefully: When replacing your refrigerator, dishwasher or clothes washer, look for versions that are Energy Star rated to save extra money easily.
  8. Reduce water usage: Replace old fixtures such as toilets and faucets with low-flow versions to save money on water bills.
  9. Use renewable energy: Consider adding solar panels or a solar water heater to take advantage of the free energy from the sun.
