Here are a few ways to reduce home heat loss in your Cheyenne area home:
- Find the leaky, drafty parts of your house and use caulking to seal the gaps. Not only does this prevent you from losing conditioned air, but it prevents moisture from making its way into gaps and putting you at risk of mold growth.
- Insulate your walls, attic roof, ducts, and pipes. Your roof can be a major source of heat gain in summer (with the sun beating down on it) and heat loss in winter (as warm, rising air carries heat to the upper levels of your home). And if heat is lost from your pipes or ducts, not all of it will get to the areas where you want it to be.
- Upgrade old windows, especially if you live in an older home. Newer, insulated windows can let plenty of light in, without letting heat in or out.
- If you don’t want to replace your windows outright, installing storm windows over them can cut energy loss by a quarter to a half.
- Keep up on your annual maintenance. Insulation, especially on pipes and ducts, can degrade, and your furnace should be checked periodically to ensure that it’s always operating at its best.
- Use programmable thermostats and home zoning to keep heat where you need it, when you need it. Heat that’s keeping rooms at a comfortable temperature while no one is there to enjoy it is as good as wasted.
